Understanding Nicotine Strength
Nicotine strength is usually listed in milligrams (mg), sometimes as a percentage. It tells you how concentrated the nicotine is in the e-liquid — not how much you’ll actually take in, which also depends on the device and how you use it.
Roughly, what the ranges mean
Lower strengths (around 0–10mg) are generally aimed at people who want minimal or no nicotine, or who are already used to vaping and prefer a lighter hit. Mid-range strengths (around 20–35mg) are the most common starting point for people switching from cigarettes. Higher strengths (40mg and up) are usually found in disposables and are meant to more closely match a stronger smoking habit.
Freebase nicotine vs. nicotine salts
You’ll also see e-liquids described as freebase or salt-based. Nicotine salts are generally smoother at higher strengths, which is part of why disposables and pod systems (which often use salts) can offer higher mg numbers without feeling as harsh as a freebase liquid at the same strength.
If you’re not sure where to start
It’s easier to start slightly lower and move up than the other way around. If a strength feels too mild after a week or two, that’s a reasonable signal to try the next step up — rather than guessing high from the start.
