Disposable vs. Pod System: Which One Fits You

Updated August 1, 2026

Most people choosing their first device end up deciding between a disposable and a pod system. Both do the same basic job, but they fit very different habits.

Disposables

A disposable comes pre-filled and pre-charged, and you throw it away once it runs out. There’s nothing to fill, charge, or maintain — you open it and use it. That makes it the simplest option, especially if you’re trying a new flavor or just want something that works right out of the box.

The trade-off is cost over time. Since you’re replacing the whole device every time, the per-puff cost is usually higher than a refillable system if you go through them often.

Pod Systems

A pod system is a reusable device with a rechargeable battery and refillable (or replaceable) pods. There’s a bit more to manage — charging the device, buying pods or e-liquid separately — but it’s cheaper per session once you’re past the upfront cost of the device itself.

Pod systems also tend to give you more control: many let you choose your own e-liquid, adjust airflow, or pick between different pod resistances for a tighter or more open draw.

Which one to pick

If you want zero setup and don’t mind replacing devices regularly, a disposable is the easier starting point. If you’re a more regular user and want to bring the ongoing cost down, a pod system usually pays for itself.
